Walk through small communities, farmland settings, the Magamba Rainforest, and breathtaking mountain views on your trek from Lushoto to Mount Tae. Experience the wonderful hospitality of the Usambara people by spending the night in friendly local guesthouses along the route.

Discover the biodiversity of Magamba Rainforest, home to indigenous tree species, medicinal plants and the rare Black-and-White Colobus Monkey. Visit the historic German Cave and learn about its colonial significance.

Visit historic villages and fields to learn about local farming methods, customs, and everyday rural life. See how unique clay pots are manufactured using methods that have been passed down through the generations by visiting a women's pottery group in Mtae.

Enjoy breathtaking views all along the way, such as the beautiful sunset at Magumba Viewpoint and the expansive, full-encompassing views of the rolling hills and valleys from Mountain Ae.
What to expect
Itinerary
Day 1: Lushoto – Magamba Rainforest – Lukozi
You meet your professional hiking guide for a briefing in Lushoto early in the morning, marking the start of your trip. Start your journey in the direction of Magamba Rainforest, one of the Usambara Mountains' most ecologically different forest areas. As your guide introduces you to native tree species and medicinal plants that the locals use, stroll along cool woodland trails. Explore the German Cave, a significant colonial-era location. Take a private vehicle to Lukozi after touring the rainforest and taking in the beautiful surroundings. After checking into your guesthouse, relax in the beautiful village setting.
Day 2: Lukozi – Rangwi
After breakfast, start walking through landscapes and rural communities on your way to Rangwi. Close engagement with local communities and an understanding of traditional farming practices are provided on this day. The rare Black-and-White Colobus Monkey may be seen along the forest areas. Discover how farmers make a living by watching them raise vegetables, corn, and other crops. Come to Rangwi in the afternoon and spend the night in a quiet monastery guesthouse.
Day 3: Rangwi – Mtae
After breakfast, travel on toward Mtae while taking in some of the trip's most amazing mountain views. The route offers views of rolling hills and a wide valley. See how traditional pots made of clay are made by visiting a local women's pottery group when you first arrive in Mtae. Engage with the women and discover the generations-old handcrafted methods. One of the trek's most memorable highlights is the breathtaking sunset across the plains, which can be seen by walking to Magumba Viewpoint in the late afternoon.
Day 4: Mtae – Lushoto
Wake up early to enjoy the fresh mountain air and panoramic morning views from Mtae. After breakfast, prepare for departure and travel back to Lushoto by public transport. Guests who wish to explore further may arrange an optional half-day local tour around Mtae. Private transport back to Lushoto can be arranged for an additional $60. The tour concludes upon arrival in Lushoto.
